Elementary School Building To Be Demolished After Asbestos Discovery
The Freewater Elementary School building in Milton-Freewater, WA will be torn down this fall after housing students for nearly 100 years.
Officials decided to demolish the building after workers found asbestos in flooring and roofing tiles. The community has wanted to replace the building for several years, and school district Business Manager Roger Weiler stated that “it (the building) had just done its duty.”
No classes have been held in the building for the last few years. A licensed asbestos abatement company and environmental consultants have been hired in an effort to safely remove all hazardous materials prior to demolition.
The start of the school year will not be delayed, according to Weiler. Upon demolition, the site of the former building will be used as a play area for students. Removal and demo are expected to be completed by December.
